Comets Outshine Warriors 42-21 |
|
Game Summary: On paper, this game looked like it should be all Wyoming Area. Crestwood had averaged a modest 267 yards of offense per game going into the Wyoming Area contest. In the end, Crestwood led by the running and passing of their sophomore quarterback Nick Aigeldinger, rolled up 413 yards of offense on the Warrior defense. But it wasn’t only Crestwood’s offense that triggered their 42-21 victory. The Comets made several key defensive plays in the second half that decided a close game. This included a 58 yard fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown and a 41 yard interception return that also was returned for a touchdown.
Make no mistake—Crestwood deserved to win this game, as they outplayed the Warriors on both sides of the ball. However, a few “weird” plays worked against the Warriors. After the Warriors had tied the game at 14 to end the first half and were driving near midfield in the third quarter, linebacker Roger Legg of Crestwood, rushed QB Chris Murphy as he dropped back to pass. Legg stripped the ball cleanly from Murphy and ran 58 yards for a touchdown. The Warriors came back and tied it at 21 late in the third period.
An Aigeldinger 67 yard run then put the Comets up 28-21 late in the third period. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Murphy threw to Sam Eramo, the ball deflected several times in the air and Matt Krupa from Crestwood picked it off and ran it back for a 42 yard touchdown. The Warriors came back on the ensuing kickoff and drove the ball to the Comet 20 yard line, but could not convert. The Comets scored a final touchdown on a 12 yard running play.

The Good: Chris Murphy had another stellar performance as he was 17 for 29 for 285 yards with 2 touchdowns and two interceptions. His statistical bottom line deserves better as one of the interceptions was a fluky play bouncing off his own receiver. In addition, several other balls went incomplete that were catchable. Sam Eramo continued to put up big numbers in receiving as he caught 9 balls for 183 yards and one touchdown. A healthy Aidan Marich also added 4 catches for 49 yards. Nick O’Brien electrified the crowd with several big kickoff returns and a beautiful touchdown reception. |
Needs Work: The defense could not figure out sophomore quarterback Nick Aigeldinger. He seemed to have the defense completely baffled with his option runs. The Warriors offensive game plan clearly called for running the ball. On one series in the first half around mid field, the Warriors ran on a 3rd and 14, and followed with a running play on 4th and 6 (and did not convert). The Warriors finished the night with 28 rushes for 79 yards (2.8 yds per carry). For better or worse, it looks like this team needs to pass first to set up its running game. |
