Nick Elko Added to Big 33 Roster - Citizens Voice

Nick Elko was excited about being selected to the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association’s annual East-West game.
It would have provided the Wyoming Area offensive lineman an opportunity to test his skills against some of the other top players in the state.
But late Monday afternoon, Elko got a promotion when he was added to the Pennsylvania roster for the Big 33 Game, meaning he will get the chance to play against the top football players from Maryland. Elko said Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer called him to see if he would be interested in playing.
“I found out late in the afternoon,” Elko said. “Coach Spencer called me and asked me if I wanted to be a replacement. I guess there is one kid who couldn’t play.”
A two-way lineman for the Warriors, Elko has had a pretty good run following the end of the season. In December he was named to the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 3A All-State team.
“This is definitely a big jump from the East-West game,” Elko said. “Now I will be facing kids from Maryland. I really don’t know much about them. Most of the kids I would have played against in the East-West Game, I know or have played against.”
With the addition of Elko, Wyoming Area will now be represented by two players in the game. Blaise Sokach-Minnick was selected as a long snapper.
“I am happy to be a part of the game,” Elko said. “It’s definitely a great experience knowing that there hasn’t been a Super Bowl without someone who played in the game.”

Blaise Sokach-Minnick Named to Big 33

CITIZENS VOICE

Having participated in the Rubio Long Snapping camps for special teams players, Blaise Sokach-Minnick had an advantage when he headed to the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim.
It was there in December when candidates worked out in a combine-type event to be selected to the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association’s Big 33 team, a roster that was revealed Tuesday.
“I was confident in it, I didn’t want to think ahead too much,” Sokach-Minnick said. “I wanted to work hard and hope for the best. It all worked out. The hard work paid off.”
It certainly did.
Sitting in study hall Tuesday morning at Wyoming Area High School, Sokach-Minnick learned he made the team by watching the press conference announcing the members of the Pennsylvania squad.
The game, which matches Pennsylvania players against Maryland players, will be played May 30 at Bishop McDevitt High School.
While the position players for the Big 33 team are essentially selected based on film provided by their respective high school coaches, specialists go through a combine event where Sokach-Minnick, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, was timed in the 40-yard dash and snapped to the kickers and punters. He estimates there were 12 other long snappers in attendance.
“This definitely wasn’t the first camp I have been to,” said Sokach-Minnick who will attend Penn State as a preferred walk-on as a long snapper. “I was a little on the experienced side. I wanted to make sure I did my best. It is a big thing for Wyoming Area. When someone makes the Big 33 they get their jersey on the wall. I wanted to make sure I made the best of it.”

Nick Elko Named to 3A All State Team

Times Leader

Wyoming Area two-way lineman Nick Elko was the only Wyoming Valley Conference player selected Tuesday to the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 3A All-State football team.
The Class A, 2A and 3A all-state teams were announced Tuesday. The WVC has no teams in Class A and 2A.
The Class 4A, 5A and 6A team will be released Wednesday.
Elko was a four-year starter for the Warriors, beginning his high school career as a fullback. The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder switched to the line as a sophomore and turned in three outstanding seasons. He recorded 31 pancake blocks this season for a line that allowed two sacks all season while making 57 tackles, nine tackles for loss, six hurries and an interception which he returned 61 yards for a touchdown. He was chosen all-state as an offensive lineman.
Elko, a two-time Times Leader All-WVC selection, recently committed to play at Division II East Stroudsburg University.
