Summary:

Summary: It was a good game--for one half. The Warriors played the Northwest Rangers tough in the first half--trailing only 13-6. Howver, the floodgates opened in the middle of the third quarter with the Rangers Austin Mazonkey scoring on a 1 yard run--which was immediately followed by a spectacular Farrod Condry 72 yard kickoff return, making the score 20-13.

However, that was the end of the fun for the Warriors. With Jeff Skursky and Farrad Condry both dinged up, Wyoming Areas offense sputtered the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Northwest offense poured on the gas --fueled by three Warrior fumbles and an interception. Wyomng Area's defense crumbled and gave up 42 points in the second half. Austin Mazonkey finished the game with 239 yards rushing.

Ben Steve had a nice game with 3 receptions. Marty Michaels had 45 yards rushing. Condry's kickoff return for a TD followed his punt return for a TD last week against GAR.

Clearly, this was a bad beating suffered by the Warriors. I will say this--when the game was clearly out of hand, the players and coaches kept battling until the very end. Over the last couple years, the Warriors have been on the winning end of some good shellackings. What goes around, comes around I guess.

The Warriors fall to 3 and 6, and will finish up their season at home next week against Pittston Area.

HUNTINGTON MILLS - The plan for Northwest Area was simple - hand the ball to Austin Mazonkey and play stout defense.

That plan was executed to perfection as Mazonkey rushed for 248 yards and three touchdowns and the Rangers defense forced five turnovers while holding Wyoming Area to just 124 yards of total offense in 55-13 victory at Lewis and Miller Stadium.

"For the first time all year we played four quarters of football on both sides of the ball," Northwest coach Carl Majer said.

On the Warriors first possession, the Ranger defense forced a Wyoming Area fumble that was recovered by Matt Zawatski. The Rangers than went on a six-play drive that culminated in a Mazonkey 5-yard touchdown run.

With the scored tied 7-7, following Jeff Skury's 7-yard touchdown run, Northwest put together a 78-yard drive.

Mazonkey carried the ball six times for 71 yards. With the ball resting on the 7-yard line, the Rangers called on Tyler Burger, who went untouched for the Northwest Area touchdown.

The Ranger defense then stepped up on Wyoming Area's first possession of the second half as it forced a Skursky fumble that was recovered by Dakota Bowman. From there it was Mazonkey carrying the ball four times for 34 yards, the last being a 1-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wyoming Area's Farrod Condrey fielded the ball on the 27 yard made a move to his right raced untouched 73 yards for the Warriors.

On Northwest Area's next possession Mazonkey took a handoff and raced 65 yards unscathed for the Ranger score.

After forcing a short Wyoming Area punt the Rangers then mounted a six-play, 27-yard drive that ended with an Adam Schechterly 1-yard burst for the Ranger touchdown.

Garrett Reese then ended the Warriors next drive as he stepped in front of an errant Kyle Borton pass. On the Ranger first play of the drive Logan Womelsdorf hit Nick Long in stride for a 47-yard scoring strike.

Zawatski recovered a Wyoming Area fumble on the Warriors next possession. Womelsdorf called his own number and rumbled in from 5 yards out for the score.

With the Warriors pinned deep in their own territory the Ranger defense forced another fumble. Once again it was Zawatski alertly recovered the loose football. Schechterly capped the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Mazonkey, Rangers run past Warriors - Times Leader

SHICKSHINNY — Austin Mazonkey wasn’t about to let Wyoming Area earn another lopsided victory over his Northwest Rangers.

Instead, Mazonkey and his teammates turned the tables on the Warriors.

Mazonkey ran for 239 yards and three touchdowns in a 55-13 win over Wyoming Area to inch Northwest closer to the top in the District 2 Class A playoffs.

“We always play this team and it seems to never be close,” Mazonkey said. “We were like, ‘Not this year.’ We played with a lot of emotion tonight and we got the win.”

The score shown on the scoreboard as the final buzzer sounded wasn’t indicative of how the game was played. The Rangers held only a 13-6 cushion over Wyoming Area. And it was a 30-second span that gave the Warriors hope once, and a crushing defeat twice.

Northwest turned a Wyoming Area fumble into a score with 6:46 to play in the third. On the ensuing kickoff, Farrod Condry scooped up the patented Northwest squib kick at his 28. He made one move and was gone, down the sidelines for the touchdown.

“We had the ability right there to make this a football game,” Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer said. “It was tough when we started to accumulate the injuries. Northwest came out strong in the second half and finished it off.”

Down 20-13 at that point, Wyoming Area was in it, and they had some momentum. But on Northwest’s next possession — the first play to be exact — Mazonkey put the nail in the coffin with a 65-yard touchdown run.

“We’re blessed with some good running backs in Mazonkey and (Tyler) Burger,” Northwest coach Carl Majer said. “We’re finally getting the right combination together but we have to come back next week. We have to play some great football coming up.”

Spencer was also impressed with the way Mazonkey ran Friday night.

“He’s outstanding,” he said. “I thought he played tough early and he definitely worked hard and took advantage of his opportunities.”

The Rangers put up 21 points in the fourth quarter, after matching that total in the third quarter.

Quarterback Logan Womelsdorf was efficient for the Rangers. He finished 5-for-8 with 80 yards and a 47-yard touchdown pass to Nick Long to open the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Northwest moves to 7-2 on the season. They are pretty much a lock for the No. 3 seed in the District 2 Class A playoffs. The Rangers host Montrose next week in the final game of the regular season.

“We feel pretty good right now,” Mazonkey said. “We have Montrose next week so we have to focus on that and head into districts.”

The loss drops Wyoming Area to 3-6. The final game of the season for the Warriors will be the annual battle with Pittston Area at home.

“Wyoming Area is a big, strong football team,” Majer said. “Their record is no indication. We have to learn how to pay hard-nosed football for four quarters from here on out and this is a start.”

Preview: The Warriors will be big underdogs when they travel to Northwest Area on Friday night. The Rangers are sitting pretty for a playoff spot in Class A with a 6-2 record, while the 3-5 Warrior playoff hopes were all but dashed last week with a one point loss to GAR. Over the last four years, these two teams have played some wild and crazy games and last year was no exception. The Warriors were cruising along with a 47-7 lead halfway through the third quarter at Jake Sobeski Stadium. The Rangers stormed back on the Warrior second team and scored 30 straight points making the game 47-37 in the fourth quarter. A 53 yard TD run by Jeff Skursky late in the game allowed the Warrior fans to exhale. While the Warriors have won all four meetings between the two teams, all of the games have been very competitive.

This year, it looks like the Rangers are a legitimate powerhouse. They have outstanding offensive balance between running and throwing the ball. Quarterback Logan Wolemsdorf leads the WVC Division 2A-A in passing--completing 55% for 900 yards, 15TDs and only 4 interceptions. Meanwhile, Austin Mazonkey leads the division in rushing with 1217 yards for a 7.5 yard per carry average. The Rangers only losses this year were suffered at the hands of Lake Lehman and Hanover--both close games. They played the Black Knights tough, only losing by 11.

The Warriors are looking for some diversity in their offense. While Jeff Skursky has rushed for over 200 yards in each of the last three games--everyone knows that the team needs to figure out a way to get other players involved in the offense--something that is easier said than done. Unfortunately, the Warriors have had little success when they have attempted to do this. On the defensive side of the ball--the Warriors' poor tackling against GAR was surprising --especially after three good defensive games. Northwest is a much better offensive team than GAR, so the defense will have to bring their "A" game.

See you in Shickshinny. (Wasn't that the name of a song?) Nick Perugini
