Summary:

Summary: After one half of football, the Warriors were staring at a 12-0 deficit--the second straight week they were shut out in the first half. A new team came out the locker room in the second half and scored 42 points. With Kyle Borton at quarterback, and Jeff Skursky at halfback behind the blocking of Rob Wargo-the Warriors ran down hill for the rest of the game. Mix in a little Marty Michaels, some outstanding blocking by the offensive line--and for the first time this year, the Warriors generated some big time offense.

It started out like another bad night for the Warriors. Holy Redeemer's Eric Kerr took the opening kickoff 80 yards -- virtually untouched, to give the Royals a 6-0 lead. On their only possession of the first quarter, the Warriors moved the ball downfield, but stalled at the Royal 10 yard line. This was looking like a replay of the Nanticoke Area game, where the Warriors moved the ball up and down the field in the first half, but could not score. Meanwhile, the Royals showed they had a running game--drove the ball 90 yards and QB Jimmy Strickland hit Eric Kerr with a 12 yard TD pass in the second quarter, making the score 12-0. The Warrior offense sputtered the remainder of the second quarter -- making the halftime score 12-0.

There was absolutely no basis for even the most optimistic Warrior true-believer to accurately predict what would happen in the second half. The Warriors took the second half kickoff and executed a power running game of the likes Warrior fans have not seen in years. With Kyle Borton at quarterback, Rob Wargo at fullback, and Jeff Skursky operating at tailback out of the "I", the Warriors ran--and ran and ran. Skursky was not only running over people--his nifty footwork was making Royal tacklers miss. Rob Wargo was leading the way with some wicked blocks. The Warriors scored 21 points in the third quarter, and added another 21 in the fourth quarter.

Besides Skursky's explosion in the second half (finishing the game with 284 yards), Marty Michaels made some nifty runs adding 31 yards for the game. The entire offensive line asserted themselves in the second half, giving Skursky and the others some gaping holes to run through. You can't say enough about the performance of Kyle Borton at quarterback. He went 4 for 6 for 88 yards--hitting Jeremy Seabridge, Ben Steve, and Ryan Murray with long passes in clutch situations. While Borton was sacked twice, he did not throw an interception.

For most of the second half, the Warrior defense smothered the Holy Redeemer offense. Danielle Stillarty did an nice job of kicking off--and the kickoff team regained their balance by consistently holding the Redeemer kickoff returns inside the Royals own 30 yardline. The defense gave up very little yardage in the third quarter--making the Royals punt deep in their own territory, giving the Warriors superior field position. The Warriors easily punched the ball in when faced with a short field.

For the first time this year, the Warriors showed they could generate some offense consistently. Skursky, running downhill from the halfback position with a full head of steam, and some superior blocking seems to be the recipe. The Warriors should now have confidence going into the teeth of their schedule. -- Nick Perugini

Skursky breaks out against Royals

WEST PITTSTON – Jeff Skursky went into the Wyoming Area locker room as a lead blocker. He came out as a devastating runner.

Skursky’s halftime conversion from fullback back to tailback sparked a Wyoming Area comeback and carried the Warriors to their second victory of the season, 42-28 over Holy Redeemer on Friday at Jake Sobeski Stadium.

Holy Redeemer led 12-0 at halftime, until Skursky carried for 272 of his 284 yards on 24 second-half carries. Skursky ran for four touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to account for 28 points.

“They told me when we were going out that I was going to run,” Skursky said of the halftime adjustments by the Wyoming Area coaching staff. “I wasn’t going to let them down.”

With fullback Robert Wargo leading him through holes that the Wyoming Area offensive line began tearing in the Holy Redeemer defense, the 210-pound Skursky built up the momentum he used to run over tacklers.

“Downhill running,” Skursky said. “That’s what Wyoming Area is all about.”

At least in the second half.

Skursky changed the feel of the game by carrying 15 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the third quarter alone to give the Warriors a 21-12 lead. Then, he finished off Holy Redeemer by scoring on three straight carries – including touchdowns 12 seconds apart – in a wild final five minutes.

The Warriors and Royals combined for 23 points in 26 seconds as part of a stretch in which they packed 37 points into 3:01.

Jimmy Strickland hit Eric Kerr with a 25-yard touchdown pass, the second scoring connection of the game for that combination and the first of two fourth-quarter scoring tosses by Strickland. That cut Wyoming Area’s lead to 27-20 with 3:57 left.

Skursky decided the game by running 51 and 19 yards for touchdowns on the next two plays – before and after Johnathan Urban recovered a fumbled kickoff by Holy Redeemer.

Eric Shorts returned the opening kickoff 80 yards up the middle to put Holy Redeemer in front and the Royals played well with the lead.

Holy Redeemer ran on 20 of 26 first-half offensive plays, picking up 10 first downs and adding to its lead on a 12-yard, Strickland-to-Kerr pass at the end of a 17-play, 94-yard scoring drive.

WEST PITTSTON - Jeff Skursky used a combination of speed and power to lead the Wyoming Area to a 42-28 come-from-behind victory over Holy Redeemer on Friday night.

"I just think that's the way we needed to go," Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer said. "We needed to give our backs a chance to run downhill and specifically Jeff."

The junior running back had just 20 yards on four carries and the Royals led the Warriors 12-0 at the half. However, Skursky came out of the locker room like a bull. He had five second-half touchdowns and accumulated 238 yards on 27 carries.

The Warriors struggled to get any yards on offense in the first half after Eric Shorts returned the opening kick 81 yards to give the Royals a 6-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game.

Holy Redeemer added another touchdown in the second quarter when Jimmy Strickland found his favorite target, Eric Kerr for a 12-yard touchdown.

The Royals failed to convert the two-point conversion and the Royals had a 12-0 lead with 10:52 left in the first half.

Strickland finished with 183 yards passing and in the process eclipsed the 4,000-yard mark for his career. Strickland now has 4,146 yards for his career.

The Skursky show started in the second half as he carried the ball three consecutive times to lead the Warriors to the 12. Marty Michaels then cashed in with a 12-yard touchdown, cutting the Holy Redeemer lead to 12-7.

On the next Wyoming Area drive, Skursky bulldozed his way into the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown, which ultimately gave the Warriors a 13-12 lead.

"Traditionally, we're a program that is going to play four quarters. We're going to play to the last snap," Spencer said. "If you play that way, even if adversity strikes a little bit early, you know you can come back as long as there are enough ticks left on the clock."

Skursky added two more rushing touchdowns extending the Wyoming Area lead to 27-12 with 5:14 left in the game.

Strickland struck back for the Royals by finding Kerr for the duo's second touchdown connection of the night. Kerr's 16-yard touchdown brought the Royals to within a score at 27-20.

However, all Strickland and the Royals offense did was awaken the beast that was Skursky.

He found the end zone twice more in the game, one a 51-yard jaunt and the final touchdown, a 19-yard run. Skursky's final two touchdowns put the game out of reach for Holy Redeemer at 42-20.

PREVIEW:

Preview: The 1 and 4 Warriors take on the 1 and 4 Royals of Holy Redeemer this Friday night at Anthony “Jake” Sobeski stadium.    The scrappy Royals have been accustomed to looking up at the rest of the pack in the 2A Wyoming Valley Conference. However, being at the bottom of the standings is a new perspective for the Warriors.    For the first time in four years, the Warriors are not in the playoff hunt.

From now until the end of the season, every game will be a dogfight—this game being no exception.    Even though both teams sport 1-4 records, Redeemer has shown it has a more potent offense.    The Royals generate 248 yards per game to the Warriors’ 167 ypg.    They have also scored 178 points in their five games compared to the Warriors’ 55 points.    From a defensive standpoint, the Warriors are the superior team.    The Royals have given up 307 rushing yards per game this season.

Holy Redeemer is led by their senior quarterback Jimmy Strickland who has thrown for 892 yards (11TDs, 7 INTs).  Eric Kerr leads WVC Division 2A with 18 receptions for 315 yards—an impressive 30 yards per reception and 5 TDs.   Make no mistake; the Royals like to sling the ball around.    Not only is Kerr the leading receiver in the division—the number 2 and 3 reception leaders are also from Holy Redeemer (Jason Hoggarth and Pat Villani).    The Royals will score some points—and in the process, perhaps throw some interceptions.

The Warriors come off a frustrating 14-7 loss to Nanticoke.   The defense played great against the Trojans--who capitalized on being on the receiving end of two interceptions.     While the Warriors’ offensive performance was probably the best of the season, they could not convert the big plays when they were in Nanticoke territory.   Jeff Skursky looked good running the ball, but there were too many times that he and the other Warrior ball carriers were stopped cold at the line of scrimmage.

For the Warriors to win this game, they will have to control the ball with their running game and finish off long drives with touchdowns.  Redeemer’s run defense is sub-par.   The best way to defend against a high octane passing attack is to keep the ball away from that offense.   It will be interesting to see if the Warriors will blitz in passing situations, or drop into coverage.    Either way, a +2 turnover advantage might be required by the Warriors to keep pace with the Royals.

One last note—the entire coaching staff will be back on Friday night which should provide a welcome boost to the team.    This might be one of the most entertaining games of the year.    It’s time for Warrior Pride to kick in.  Nick Perugini
