WARRIORS ROMP OVER ROYALS: 69-21

O'BRIEN SETS SCHOOL RUSHING RECORD: SCHMITZ, ZEZZA, LANUNZIATA SHINES

Holy Redeemer

HR1

Wyoming Area
HR2 HR3 HR4

It wasn't a complete surprise. The Warriors ran roughshod over the Holy Redeemer Royals at Wilkes Barre Memorial Stadium on an overcast cool Saturday afternoon. The "Big Four", Nick O'Brien, Cody Schmitz, Jordan Zezza, and Zak LaNunziata put each put up some impressive stats in two quarters of work. O'Brien broke Jim Pizano's WA rushing record in the second quarter with a 31 yard TD run. O'Brien finished the half (and the day) with 101 yards rushing in 9 carries. Cody Schmitz had 5 rushes for 60 yards and added 3 receptions for 86 yards. Schmitz had 3 touchdowns including an 82 yard kickoff return to start the second half. Jordan Zezza's QB rating didn't suffer as he went 5 for 5 in passing for 182 yards. Zezza also rushed for 53 yards on three carries. Finally, Zak LaNunziata took a screen pass 76 yards for a TD, and added a 3 yard TD run for good measure. Trent Grove caught a 32 yard TD pass from Zezza and Kyle Borton connected with Evan Skene on a 9 yard pass in the fourth quarter.

The big takeaway from this game--the Warriors are at their best when they find a way to have everyone contribute. Jeff Skursky, back from an injury, looked good on both sides of the ball. Robert Wargo had an outstanding game on special teams. The real season starts next week. when the Warriors take on a high flying Meyers offense at home. -- Nick Perugini

QB O’Brien sets Warriors mark in win

TOM FOX, For The Times Leader
3:57 am

WILKES-BARRE – Four young Wyoming Area children ran onto the turf of Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium, small footballs and pen in hand.

They quickly searched out Nick O’Brien and asked for his autograph.

You can’t blame the youngsters. They just wanted their to catch a piece of Warrior history.

O’Brien became the school’s all-time leading rusher on a 32-yard run on the first play of the second quarter, and Wyoming Area reached the end zone early and often in a 69-28 victory over Holy Redeemer Saturday afternoon.

O’Brien needed 69 yards to break the record held by former standout Jim Pizano, which stood at 4,086. The senior now has 4,118 yards with four games remaining in the regular season.

“It’s a great feeling,” he said. “It stands in the record book as an individual accomplishment, but really, I feel that it is an entire team effort. Every kid, every that has ever blocked for me, the entire team and the coaching staff all deserve the honor as well.”

The senior record-holder wasted little time making his impact felt.

He scored on a short, 1-run yard on the Warriors’ opening drive, and on the next series, found Cody Schmitz for a 33-yard score.

His record-breaker, a 32-yard jaunt down the sideline, gave the Warriors a 27-6 lead 10 seconds into the second quarter.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Wyoming Area Randy Spencer said. “As much as he does athletically, he’s a great character guy. He wants to make that unselfish play, whether it is a block or make sure to point out how well someone else is doing. He’s amazing from a leadership standpoint.”

O’Brien’s day was done after one half. He rushed for 101 yards, completed 1 of 3 for a touchdown, and also caught one ball for 21 yards.

“He’s an explosive athlete,” Redeemer head coach Pat Reece said. “We created a bubble and we wanted to keep him in that bubble. We needed the kids to do their assignments, but if he got outside that containment, he would be dangerous. And he was.”

Wyoming Area (4-2) was explosive.

The Warriors had six touchdowns more than 30 yards in length. Jordan Zezza threw for three touchdowns, completing all five of his passes for 182 yards. He had TD throws of 40, 32 and 76 yards – the latter to Zack Lanunziata that pushed the game into the mercy rule.

In total, Wyoming Area outgained Holy Redeemer (1-5), 575-298, in total yardage.

Vince Villani provided the first spark for the Royals, using a quick burst of speed down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown on a kickoff return.

The problem was Wyoming Area already had a 19-0 lead. The Warriors scored on seven of its eight first-half possessions, and nine of 11 for the game.

Redeemer Jimmy Strickland had another solid outing, completing 15 of 29 for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

O'Brien rushes into record book

Ryan Konopki (correspondent)
Published: October 7, 2012

WILKES-BARRE - After he ran and carried his way into the Wyoming Area history books, Nick O'Brien was convinced it should not be his name alone in becoming the Warriors all-time rusher.

"It's a great feeling, but it's an entire team effort," said O'Brien. "This is as much their record as it is mine."

O'Brien surpassed Jim Pizano's mark of 4,086 yards with a dazzling 31-yard touchdown run and Wyoming Area ran over Holy Redeemer, 69-28, Saturday afternoon at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.

"A great accomplishment," WA coach Randy Spencer said of O'Brien's feat. "He's done a great job for us. As much as it is an athletic accomplishment, it's a tip of the hat to his character as well."

The Warriors ground game set the tone early, pounding its way through the Royals defense, which gave up 350 rushing yards on 39 carries.

O'Brien topped all rushers with 81 yards and two touchdowns, putting him at 4,099 career rushing yards. He also threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Cody Schmitz in the first quarter to put the Wyoming Area up 13-0.

"We have the potential to make big plays," Spencer said. "For us, it's contagious."

Schmitz continued to make one big play after another for the Warriors (4-2). He hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass - his second of the first quarter - from Jordan Zezza and returned the opening halftime kickoff 87 yards for a score. He finished the day with 57 rushing yards, 86 reception yards and three touchdowns.

Zezza had a career day of his own, completing all five of his passes for 182 yards and three touchdown passes. He connected with Schmitz, Trent Grove and Zack Lanunziata on passes of 40, 32, and 76 yards, respectively, as the Warriors headed into halftime with a 48-12 lead.

O'Brien said of his team thrived off of those scores.

"We were able to sustain a lot of drives," he said, "but we feed of the big play."

Holy Redeemer (1-5) struggled to find consistency in the passing game due to a half-dozen drops by receivers. Eric Kerr, who led the Wyoming Valley Conference coming into the day with 32 receptions, was held to four catches for 22 yards.

Royals quarterback Jimmy Strickland finished the game 15 of 29 for 194 yards and two touchdowns and may have found a big-play target in Vincent Villani. Villani had two catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff 78 yards for a score to cut Wyoming Area's lead to 19-6 in the first quarter.

Pat Villani had six carries for 53 yards on Holy Redeemer's final drive. The 10-play, 80-yard drive was the best drive of the day for the Royals, but it came down 69-20 late in the game. The drive was capped off by a one yard dive by Tyler Kastendieck.

GAME PREVIEW

Preview

The Warriors (3-2) travel to Wilkes Barre Memorial Stadium to play a Saturday afternoon game against the 1-4 Royals of Holy Redeemer.    It’s hard to make a case for the Royals pulling off an upset of Wyoming Area.  While the Royals have averaged a respectable 19 points per game, they have also yielded a whopping 45 points per game.   GAR led the Royals 44-6 at halftime last week, on their way to a 65-28 victory.

One thing is certain; Holy Redeemer will air it out on Saturday.   Junior QB Jimmy Strickland has completed 75 passes out of 136 attempts, with 6 TDs, and 5 INTs for close to 1000 yards.  Those are not bad numbers over a five game period.    Keep an eye on junior WR Eric Kerr.  He has 32 receptions for 450 yards and is responsible for about half of the Royals pass receiving yardage.      Holy Redeemer threw the ball 36 times against GAR and it is quite likely that we will see a similar air show on Saturday.

Alas, man cannot live by pass alone.   The Royals do not have one runner with over 100 total yards rushing for the season.    It is difficult to imagine the Royals running the ball successfully on the Warriors—who have played pretty well on defense this year.    The fact that the Warriors have a strong defensive secondary with Schmitz, O’Brien, Zezza, Condry, and Pegg—should make it all the more difficult for the Royals.   Woody Hayes, the coach of Ohio State in the 1960’s and 70’s once said -- “If you throw the ball, three things can happen—and two of them are bad.”

If all goes according to plan, Nick O’Brien should gain his 69 yards early in the game to surpass Jim Pizano as WA’s all time leading rusher.   Last year, O’Brien had his way with the Royals, rushing for 121 yards on only 7 carries.    Cody Schmitz,  Zak LaNunziata and Jordan Zezza are all gaining steam on offense as the season progresses.  Schmitz had a great night running the ball against a tough Nanticoke defense.  In emergency duty as fullback, LaNunziata has demonstrated that he can gain some tough yards up the middle.    If I were an opposing coach, I would be worried about Jordan Zezza as a receiver over the middle.    He’s a big target for an accurate O’Brien.

Well—maybe the Warriors can get off to a fast start this week.     See you on Saturday—Nick Perugini

Upon Further Review: Trent Grove and Joe Taylor both had great defensive games against Nanticoke.
