It wasn't pretty...but a win is a win. The defense played great, but the offense was inconsistent and mistake prone--turnovers and penalties halted several drives. It took a touchdown pass from Murphy to Eric Eramo late in the fourth quarter to save the day.
If you're an optimist, you would say that the score could have easily been 30-3 as the Warriors outgained the Wildcats 229 to 60. Nick O'Brien had some nifty runs on the outside, while Matt Kintz powered for some big gainers up the middle. O'Brien's halfback pass to Kody Nowicki set the stage for the game winning touchdown pass to Eramo. The defense was dominant all night...something that hadn't been at all last year. You have to be excited about what you saw from the defensive line. They stuffed the run all night and the defensive ends did a great job of containing.
On the flip side--the passing game was flat...only 4 completions all night. To be fair, one touchdown pass was called back on a penalty, and another touchdown pass was dropped. 70 yards of penalties and 3 turnovers continued a disturbing pattern from last year.
Several sophomores saw signfiicant playing time on the line--and they played very well. The team has much more depth this year, which should help them late in the game. |
